(Australia Vs Malaysia)
The 28th & 29th July saw the 7th International Clubs Taekwondo Championships taking place in Perth Western Australia. The Championship was sanctioned by Taekwondo Western Australia Inc and hosted by Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan. The two day competition saw over 250 black belt competitors from England, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Holland, Mauritius, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia competing for Medals, with Taekwondo Western Australia Inc Athletes putting in outstanding performances.

(England Scores Knockdown Vs South Australia)
Carmela Hartnett current National Team Member from Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan dispatched opponents from England, Singapore, Australia and Malaysia to take out the Gold medal in the Open Female Poomsae division, while Roy Khoh from Australian Taekwondo Academy won out against competitors from England, Holland, Australia and Malaysia to take Gold. Richard Huynh from Australian Taekwondo Academy, also a current National Team Member took out Gold in the Male Masters division, with Western Australians and English Competitors taking out the minor medals. Jesse McLure from South West Taekwondo Academy, another Taekwondo WA member on the current national team won gold in the Junior male category against opponents from Malaysia, Singapore and Victoria.
Mesut Karaman from Powerhouse Taekwondo Victoria was outstanding in winning through four rounds of tough, close competition against competitors from Malaysia, Mauritius and Australia to take out the male feather weight division. The lightweight divisions, Robert Hissey from Total Taekwondo in South Australia and Ben Hartmann from Tans Queensland were both in good form with Ben taking out opponents from ATI Western Australia and England before meeting Robert in the finals who had defeated Holland and England to book his birth against Ben, who was the eventual winner of the light weight division.

(Queensland Vs Western Australia)
Chad Cross from Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan was unlucky to lose against Thomas Power from Tans Taekwondo Queensland in the final of Male welter weight, having won the junior division the day before Chad found himself again in the finals against Thomas, who had dispatched Chad’s club mate Andrew McLagen and Lim Toh Huei from Malaysia in earlier rounds. At the end of three rounds the score was locked at eight all and went to sudden death, with both player kicking simultaneously and hitting, Thomas had the more clean impact which got him the judges point and a well deserved win.

(Western Australia Vs Victoria)
10 year old Adam Henry was one of Taekwondo Western Australia’s standout’s in the minor division with impact in his kicks that belied his young age and physical frame, winning three bouts including a 7 point stoppage against Singapore on his way to winning the finals of the under 34kg class against Mitchell Aarons of Melbourne Taekwondo Centre.

ATI’s Stephen Pigram was in outstanding form in the Male Flyweight Division, winning three bouts to take out the Gold Medal against club mate Michael Kaplan in the finals. Club mate Cameron Sutton had to settle for Bronze after loosing his third bout narrowly to eventual winner Stephen. Amy Fortescue from South West Academy narrowly lost to Malaysia in the finals of the Female Junior Lightweight division, in an exciting well fought bout. Oh Do Kwan twin Sister’s Catherine and Julie Dawson ended up in the finals of the Female junior flyweight after defeating Malaysian and Singapore Athletes on the way, Julie took the gold by 1 point in the dying seconds of the bout. ATI’s Troy Burton defeated England and South Australia to take out the Male Middleweight Gold Medal.
(Australia Vs Malaysia)
Taekwondo Western Australia Inc organised and controlled the referee’s for the event, it was pleasing to see that there were minimal controversial decisions, with many teams commenting that the referee’s did a very good job.
